The most recent treatment of William’s biography is Ian Watson, The Great Migration, 1636–1638, vol. 1 (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2024), 68-75. As is characteristic in this series, Watson does not provide a complete chronological treatment of William’s children. Walter Goodwin Davis partly followed this line, in Massachusetts and Maine Families in the Ancestry of Walter Goodwin Davis (1885–1966): A Reprinting, in Alphabetical Order by Surname, of the Sixteen Multi-Ancestor Compendia, 3 vols. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1996), 1:6-10. The early American generations also appear in David W. Hoyt, The Old Families of Salisbury and Amesbury, Massachusetts (Providence, R. I.: Snow & Farnham, Printers, 1897), 31-3. Neither gives a detailed treatment of the children of the second Capt. Joseph Allen; for this, Vital Records of Gloucester, Massachusetts, to the End of the Year 1849, 3 vols. (Topsfield, Mass.: Topsfield Historical Society, 1917–24), is still essential.
