Sources

This family is described in Edward J. Harrison, The English Origins of Stephen Gates, 1638 Immigrant to Massachusetts, New England Historical and Genealogical Register 160 (2006): 7-14, at 9-14. Elizabeth’s burial record at Coney Weston, dated 29 March 1598, calls her Elizabeth Wright alias Moer widow (p. 10); in her will, made shortly before her death, she calls herself Elizabeth Wright al[ia]s Mower (p. 11). On these grounds, Harrison suggests that between 1592 and 1598 she had married a man named Mower, Moer, or Moore (p. 13). Her testamentary dual identification is understandable in view of the fact that her Wright children (and no Moore children) were her heirs, but it is equally plausible to suppose that Moore or some variant was her maiden name. None of the evidence contradicts either proposal; further research is needed.
