Sources
The most recent treatment of Thomass biography is Ian Watson, The Great Migration, 16361638, vol. 1 (Boston: New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2024), 199-207. As is characteristic in this series, Watson does not provide a complete chronological treatment of Thomass children.
The Arnold family of Rhode Island receives adequate treatments from John Osborne Austin, The Genealogical Dictionary of Rhode Island; Comprising Three Generations of Settlers Who Came Before 1690 (1887; reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1978), 240-1, and
H. Minot Pitman, Some Arnolds of Smithfield, R. I.,
Rhode Island History 13 (1954): 111-23, reprinted in Genealogies of Rhode Island Families from Rhode Island Periodicals, 2 vols. (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1983), 1:62-74.
The English origin proposed here follows Edson Salisbury Jones, The Parentage of William Arnold and Thomas Arnold of Providence, Rhode Island,
New England Historical and Genealogical Register 69 (1915): 64-9.
This has been disputed recently by Richard H. Benson, The Arnold Family of Smithfield, Rhode Island (Boston: Newbury Street Press, 2009), who points out that Jones does not eliminate all possible candidates for Thomass father from the family to which William belonged.
Benson, unfortunately, adduces no additional evidence upon which to decide the matter. In addition, Watsons newly suggested evidence for Thomass first marriage (pp. 205-6) indicates that the candidate for his father (Richard Arnold of Killingworth alias Kenilworth, Warks.) who was not favored by Jones nevertheless cannot be excluded.
